Junque Art Studio Play - Playing With Color

Studio-Play-Blog-Title.jpg

It's time for another Junque Art Studio Play™ video! (Formerly Fast Forward Art Play™) It's really all about playing, having fun, and discovering new things. I try to make time several times a week to play and explore in my art journal. To get in the "play" state of mind I find it helps when I limit my time to 30 minutes or less. When my time is limited I tend to not over think things and just let things happen. (Most of the time anyway.)

I have been trying to use different color combinations lately and in this Studio Play time I pushed myself to use colors I don't normally use. It's good to have those comfortable tools in your art, but it's also great to explore new things. Your art journal is the perfect place to explore.

I hope you enjoy the video and I hope it inspires you to try some new colors and just make some time to play! Remember the page was created in under 30 minutes and I have fast forwarded the video times 2 so it's something you can watch quick.

When I first started I wasn't really liking where it was going. But I kept working quickly and making moves with color and marks. In the end I really liked how it turned out. I think I have found a new go to color combo to add to my tool box.

Below are most of the supplies I used in today's Studio Play Video. This list is to help you locate the products that I used. Please feel free to substitute products that you already have but it's always fun to shop for new art supplies. If you have any questions about supplies please send me a note in the comments below.

P.S. I used a hand carved stamp in the video so there is no link for the stamp.

It doesn't take a lot of time to create in your art journal. It's all about playing and having fun. So I would love for you to challenge yourself to carve out 30 minutes a week to just play!

Fast Forward Art Play™ - Celebrate

FastForwardArt-celebrate2.jpg
FastForwardArt-celebrate4

It's time for another Fast Forward Art Play™ video and it's time to CELEBRATE spring! During this play time I challenged myself to work with a color I don't normally use...purple. Now my niece loves purple, but I am just not a purple girl.

It was a bit of a challenge to work with the purple at first, but I do love how the page came out combined with a few of my favorite colors. I really LOVE the new stencil I got from Stencil Girl by Maria McGuire. I know I will be using it a lot! I also love the surprise I got when I was collaging some vintage paper on the center of the flower. I was getting ready to use one side and flipped it over to see what the other side looked like and found the word "celebrate" stamped on it. I had stamped the word at some point and the scrap piece ended up in my paper stash. I love little fun surprises like that. So I decided to name the page celebrate in honor of spring!

I hope you enjoy watching the process. Remember the page was created in under 30 minutes and I have fast forwarded the video times 2 so it's something you can watch quick.

Remember it doesn't take a lot of time to create in your art journal. It's all about playing and having fun. So I would love for you to challenge yourself to carve out 30 minutes a week to just play! Fast Forward Art Play™ - Just Create

I am finding that if I make time to create, my creative muse is more likely to stick around. That's always a good thing. I don't like it when my muse decides to go on vacation without telling me and with no word of when it will be back. So to try to keep my creative muse happy, I have been really making an effort to carve out small chunks of time each week to just create for the sake of creating.

A great way for me to stop and make art is to actually put it on my calendar. Just 30 minutes to play. I wanted to share my creative process for this art journal page that I created in less than 30 minutes. I hope you enjoy the video below. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments. (Note: Video is fast forwarded 2 times.)

Why I Love Art Journaling

Hey sweet creative peeps! Today I wanted to share with you one of my passions…art journaling, and why I love it! Back in 2004 when I owned a retail scrapbook store altered books were starting to creep into the scrapbook world. I was hooked immediately!

JunqueArt Art Journals

I think I was drawn to the combination of vintage and new items together that created a unique piece of art in a book. It was my first exposure to a mixed media art form.  As the years have passed I have also found a love and passion for mixed media art and art journaling. I love that I can combine many different products in any way I want and create beautiful, happy, quirky, fun pieces of art. As much as I love creating mixed media pieces on a canvas or wood, I don’t always want to feel like it has to be a perfect piece of art. One of the ways I still enjoy mixed media art without feeling attached to a completed or even perfect piece is through art journaling.

ArtJournal-JunqueArt

There are so many ways to approach art journaling. Some use it as their journaling practice and truly write a ton in their books combined with some sort of visual elements. Those visual elements can be sketches, more complex drawings, painting, collage, and more. Really the sky is the limit and it all depends on your personal style and preference.

Sping-JunqueArt

My approach to art journaling leans more toward the art. I do write some on my pagesbut my journaling consists more of quotes or just phrases that I want to remember.I love using my art journal for experimentation and continuing to develop my art style. I may use a page just to try out a new product or a combination of products. I may use it to try a new color palette. I may just start a page because I have an idea in my head that I just need to get out. I love the freedom of art journaling because really anything goes. I love that I don’t feel like I have to be perfect. I love that it’s just a place to play and have fun and experiment. I love that a lot of times my art journal pages become a favorite piece of art and a lot of that does have to do with I approach it with no real plan and no expectations. Do I create ugly stuff? Absolutely! But even the ugly can be beautiful because it allowed me to express something that I needed to express through color and getting messy with paint.

FreedomToUnfold-JunqueArt

I have put together a little video for you of me creating an art journal page in one of my favorite vintage art journals. The only plan I had when starting this page was to capture a beautiful short quote that a creative friend expressed in a conversation. We were discussing what it meant to be creative and she said “the freedom to unfold”. I thought it was a beautiful thing to remember. We are all creative in some way, and really all we need to do is give ourselves the permission and “the freedom to unfold”.  So I hope you enjoy watching my process in the video below and I hope you give yourself "the freedom to unfold" and to try something new and creative.

Thank you so much for watching and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.  And I would love to know what new creative thing is unfolding for you! Please share that in the comments too.

Fast Forward Art Journal Page Process

FFAPIcon

On of my favorite things to do is work in my art journals. I thought you might enjoy watching me work in one of my favorite vintage journals. I started without a plan and just worked freely and went with my intuition as I worked. It's all about playing and learning and making time for art.

If you have any questions about my process or the products I used please don't hesitate to ask in the comments below. I hope you enjoyed the video and I will be sharing more Fast Forward Art videos.

Speaking of videos and art journaling, I am working on something very exciting that I hinted to in my previous post. I am so excited to share that I am working on an online Art Journaling workshop! I am nervous, wondering if I'm crazy, and excited all at the same time. But as I work through the process I am loving how it is evolving! I will be sharing more about it soon.

If you would like to keep up with Workshop updates just sign up for the Creative Updates. When you sign up you will also get a FREE high quality digital art print from my art journal called "Finding Your Heart". It has a special meaning to me and I hope it is something that will inspire you too.

Listening to Your Heart

Sometimes it is really hard to listen. And when you do hear it, sometimes you want to just ignore the whisper. But when the whisper becomes so loud you can't ignore it you finally have to take action. That is what I am doing. I am listening to my heart and really doing one or two things each day to work on what it has been telling me for a while now.

I made this journal page several months ago when my heart was whispering to me. I set my timer for 30 minutes, had no plan, and just started creating in my art journal.  I did fast forward the video to make it shorter for you. I am sharing this process video with you in hopes that it touches you in a way to follow your heart too, or at least to make some time to have some fun and create something!

I hope you enjoy and I would love to hear your feedback on the video in the comments below. I am a total beginner to the video thing, so please be gentle. LOL
